This book is set at 17th century Holland. It revolves about the life of Griet, who is a maid at Johannes Vermeer's house and is the model of one of his paintings with the same title. Of course, this is a fiction but some of the names of the characters are true and is related to the life of the Painter. Basically, it pertains to the events of Griet's life, how she became the subject of Vermeer's painting, and what lead her to such decision.
Tracy Chevalier is superb! I was in love with the book the moment I saw it on the Magazine back when I was still in High School and when I finally found it on Book Sale, I didn't think twice, I bought it right away. And true to my instincts, it was a very nice novel indeed. I mean, if not, then how was I able to finish it in one day! ;)
