As I was searching the bookstore for some new potential good read, I came across The Guynd. I was actually attracted to the cover at first but when I read the front flap, I was intrigued and curiosity hit me. So I bought it and so far I didn't regret it though I haven't finished reading it yet.
It was about the family history of the author's husband and the culture of Scotland. The guynd was with his family for over 200 years, it was passed on from generation to generation to the oldest son and together with the mansion and the farm and all the once glorious things about the guynd, is the weight of maintaining it and maintaining as well the name of the family.
I learned that Scotland is actually outside England and is under the UK government aside from their own. It can be synonymous to external and internal thing. Also, Scotland was once a very fast forward nation considering of course that before, the Scotts were one of the best engineers in the world during the time when industrialization is new. Until they the once great nation became stagnant. The same scenario happened to the guynd as what I understand from the book. It was once a place for the elites back when agriculture business was still strong and now the heir, which is the husband of the author, is trying to hold on to it and somehow will be able to restore even a bit of its glamour before.
I liked this book because it tells a story about a certain past of a bit ordinary people, not so great, but not too ordinary either. It opens a door for me to take a glimpse of classic and vintage in the most realistic way. I never thought that some of this houses, or a better way to call it, mansions actually still exists today though of course not as beautiful and elegant as it was before.
I haven't finished it yet so this is just what I can share. And I'm enjoying it more every time I read it.
